Leipzig Panometer, Leipzig

The Leipzig Panometer is a unique cultural attraction in the Connewitz district of Leipzig. Housed in a former gasometer—a large, cylindrical structure originally used for gas storage—this site has been transformed into an immersive visual experience by Austrian-born artist Yadegar Asisi. Asisi, who created the Panometer in 2003, cleverly coined its name by merging "panorama" and "gasometer."

The Leipzig Panometer occupies a disused telescopic gas holder built in 1909 under the direction of architect Hugo Licht. This historic structure, with a diameter of 57 meters (187 feet) and a total height of 49 meters (161 feet) including its cupola with lantern, was operational until 1977. After being decommissioned, it underwent renovation from 2002 to 2005 to accommodate Asisi's panoramic displays. The transformation was completed with the addition of a glass foyer, which links it to an adjacent gasometer and also houses a restaurant.

The Panometer's panoramic images are massive, measuring 105 meters (344 feet) in circumference and 30 meters (98 feet) in height, making them the largest worldwide. Created with digital technology, these images blend photos, drawings, and paintings into one large file, printed on textile strips, and assembled into a continuous circular display inside the gasometer. Visitors view the panorama from a raised central platform, with perspective distortion enhancing the spatial effect.

To further enrich the immersive experience, the Leipzig Panometer incorporates light and sound effects, including a simulated day-night cycle, ambient nature sounds, and music composed specifically for the exhibition by Belgian composer Eric Babak. Additionally, the space between the panoramic display and the outer gasometer wall features a thematic exhibition, presently focusing on the Titanic, along with a film viewing room, offering a comprehensive and engaging visitor experience.
