Leopold Kazerne (Leopold Barracks), Ghent

The Leopold Barracks in Ghent is a historic military complex built between 1890 and 1905, designed by architects Modeste de Noyette and O. Geerling in an eclectic style. Spanning over two hectares, the barracks originally housed around 1,300 soldiers. Despite its completion in 1905, the complex wasn't utilized until October 1, 1907, when the 2nd Line Regiment moved in.

During World War I, the barracks were occupied by German troops who modernized the facility by replacing gas lighting with electricity and upgrading the kitchen complex. Renamed "Kaserne Kaiser Wilhelm," the barracks served as a strategic site for the German forces. The German occupation continued during World War II, with the Luftwaffe installing a radar system and anti-aircraft guns, leading to the loss of five spires and most of the ornamental ironwork.

Following the restructuring of the Belgian armed forces, parts of the barracks were sold to the city of Ghent, while the Belgian army retained other sections, including the provincial command of East Flanders. Since 2007, the Higher Institute of Fine Arts (HISK) has been located in the barracks.

In January 2018, developers DMI and Matexi won a competition to redevelop the site into a sustainable urban neighborhood, focusing on preserving its historical and architectural heritage. The redevelopment aims to transform the Leopold Barracks into a peaceful gathering place for the community, adhering to strict sustainability standards.
