Liberty of Brugge (Brugse Vrije), Brugge

The Liberty of Brugge (Brugse Vrije) is a site steeped in history, previously serving as the judicial heart of the region. Originally an independent administrative, financial, and judicial entity of the County of Flanders since the 12th century, the Liberty of Brugge did not oversee the city of Brugge itself but managed the surrounding area. By the end of the 14th century, it became recognized as the 'fourth member' of Flanders, alongside prominent cities like Brugge, Ghent, and Ypres. The administrative role of Brugse Vrije continued until 1795.

Historically, the building served as a law court from 1795 to 1984. Today, it houses the Brugge City Records Office, preserving invaluable civic documents that chronicle the city's past, making it a vital resource for historical research. Additionally, part of the building is maintained by Musea Brugge, notably the aldermen's chamber.

One of the Liberty of Brugge's most remarkable features is its Renaissance Chamber, which contains a magnificent 16th-century fireplace. This black marble fireplace, a tribute to Emperor Charles V who visited Brugge in 1515, was designed by Lancelot Blondeel and includes materials like oak and alabaster. The grandeur of this piece is matched by historical artworks and furnishings that decorate the single chamber, offering a vivid glimpse into the era's aesthetic.

The exterior of the Liberty of Brugge is equally impressive with its facade located on the Burg next to the City Hall, where a golden statue of Lady Justice symbolizes the building's longstanding judicial functions. The courtroom itself, accessible via the old assize court, retains the grandeur of its historical function. Here, a colossal mantelpiece from 1528 and a painting by Gillis Van Tilborch depict a 17th-century court session, transporting visitors back in time.

The Liberty of Brugge, with its rich history and preserved decor, stands as a testament to the city's evolving governance and legal landscape, providing both a cultural heritage site and a valuable archive for researchers and visitors alike.
