Liberty Place One and Two, Philadelphia
Liberty Place, a prominent skyscraper complex in Philadelphia, stands as a testament to the city's architectural evolution. This complex includes One Liberty Place, a towering 61-story skyscraper reaching 945 feet (288 meters), and its slightly shorter companion, Two Liberty Place, which spans 58 stories and 848 feet (258 meters). Together, they form a striking feature of Philadelphia's skyline.
The complex also houses the Shops at Liberty Place, a two-story shopping mall, and the Westin Philadelphia Hotel with 14 stories. These additional structures complement the skyscrapers, offering both commercial and hospitality services.
The construction of One Liberty Place commenced in 1985 and concluded in 1987, heralding a new era as the city's first skyscraper. Its iconic design, crowned with a spire reminiscent of New York City's Chrysler Building, was conceived by architect Helmut Jahn and his firm, Murphy/Jahn. The spire's gabled angular setbacks are particularly notable, reflecting a strong influence from the Chrysler Building.
The second phase of the Liberty Place project included Two Liberty Place, the hotel, a shopping mall, and a parking garage. Construction began in 1988, catalyzed by Cigna Group's commitment to lease the entirety of Two Liberty Place for its global headquarters. Completed in 1990, it became the city's second-tallest building. Notably, Two Liberty Place's spire is shorter and broader, a modification accommodating tenant Cigna's requirements.
Liberty Place dramatically changed Philadelphia's skyline by breaking height barriers and inspiring future skyscraper projects. It marks a significant shift in the city's architecture towards modern skyscraper design.
