Linda Monument, Tallinn
Linda Monument was created by the sculptor August Weizenberg, and it is officially recognized as a cultural heritage site. Weizenberg, fascinated by Estonian mythology, envisioned statues of Vanemuine on Toome Hill in Tartu and Linda in Tallinn. The marble Linda statue was completed in 1880 and is now in the Art Museum of Estonia. In 1920, a bronze Linda statue was erected on the Kalev tumulus at Toompea Hill's base, atop a Finnish granite boulder as its pedestal.
The bronze part of the monument depicts a famous scene from the Estonian national epic known as "Kalevipoeg." In this scene, Linda, who is in mourning, is shown carrying a stone to the grave of Kalev and has taken a moment to rest on the stone. The sculpture is mounted on a granite base with sharp angles, resembling a tall cliff.
Over time, the Linda monument has evolved into a symbol of national importance. Twice a year, on the anniversaries of the March deportation of 1949 (March 25) and the June deportation of 1941 (June 14), a ceremony is conducted by the Estonian Memento Union at the Linda monument to honor and remember the victims of these deportations.
In front of the monument, there is a granite plaque inscribed with the words of the poet Marie Under: "I still think of those that were taken from here... Their anguish screams to the sky."
