Lisgar Collegiate Institute, Ottawa

Lisgar Collegiate Institute, located in downtown Ottawa, is a significant historical building constructed between 1872 and 1908. This four-story edifice, made of grey limestone, showcases the Gothic Revival architectural style. The building was designed by esteemed architect W. T. Thomas from Montreal. Situated near the Rideau Canal, it holds a special place in Ottawa's heritage.

Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act by the City of Ottawa, Lisgar Collegiate Institute possesses heritage value due to its distinction as Ottawa's first high school. As one of the seven designated high schools in Ontario, the institution was originally known as Ottawa Collegiate Institute before being renamed Lisgar Collegiate Institute. It played a significant role in the development of secondary education in late 19th-century Ontario.

Over the years, the school grew rapidly, becoming Ottawa's sole Collegiate Institute for an extended period. It holds historical significance as a renowned educational establishment and is associated with notable figures who contributed to the city's growth, such as James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, actor Lorne Greene, and former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson.

Today, Lisgar Collegiate Institute is one of the country's best regarded public schools. The school serves the neighbourhoods of Sandy Hill, New Edinburgh, Centretown, and Rockcliffe Park, and has many students transferring from other areas, attracted by the school's reputation and prestige.
