Lower Saxony State Museum, Hanover
The Lower Saxony State Museum occupies an impressive Neo-Renaissance edifice constructed in the 19th century, situated across from the City Hall. Within its walls, an extensive and diverse array of artistic creations, sculptures, and historical items spanning from the medieval era to the 20th century are on display. Furthermore, the museum encompasses specialized exhibitions dedicated to the fields of natural history, ethnology, and archaeology.
Originally known as the Museum of Art and Science, it underwent a name change and relocation in 1902 due to the expansion of its collections, outgrowing the available space. The building's cupola suffered significant damage during World War II, but in preparation for Expo 2000, the entire museum underwent substantial renovations in 1995.
The State Gallery within the museum houses artwork ranging from the 11th century to the 21st century. Visitors can appreciate Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, as well as paintings crafted by German artists and impressionists. In the realm of natural history, notable attractions include a life-sized dinosaur exhibit and a vivarium showcasing over 2000 species native to the Lower Saxony region. The archaeology section is particularly remarkable, featuring artifacts that chronicle over half a million years of human history. The ethnology exhibition boasts a vast collection of more than 20,000 artifacts representing cultures and religions from across the globe.
