Luthergemeinde, Heidelberg

Luthergemeinde, Heidelberg

The Luthergemeinde is a Lutheran church complex that includes various educational and civic buildings. The main building is octagonal, while the church, inaugurated in 1964, is hexagonal with rainbow-colored light bands under the roof.

The congregation now includes over 2,500 members. Originally, a "simple floor plan" was requested in the architectural competition to ensure the design did not obstruct devotion. A freestanding tower houses five bells, and in 1989, it was topped with a cross designed by Dieter Quast.

This modern church in the west of the city was envisioned as a counterpart to the Heiliggeistkirche in the east. Around the turn of the century, a community center was built around the church, tower, and kindergarten. This center includes a community hall, several side rooms, and a kitchen. Large glass surfaces and flexible walls make the entire ensemble accessible and open, even into the church itself.

The church regularly hosts a special service called NAVI (New, Different, Versatile, Inspiring), which addresses contemporary life with new liturgical forms, modern music, media, and sensory elements. Twice a year, faith courses are offered where people from diverse backgrounds come together to discuss and gain new insights and inspiration. The congregation also highly values ecumenism, maintaining close ties with the Catholic Philipp Neri community.
