Lutherkirche (Luther Church), Leipzig
The Luther Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church and is part of the Forum Thomanum educational campus. Designed by architect Julius Zeißig, this impressive Gothic Revival structure is located in Leipzig's famous Johanna Park. Remarkably, the Luther Church survived the extensive bombing of Leipzig during the Second World War and still stands in its original state over a century later. Visitors can admire the stunning stained glass windows, appreciate the pristine pipe organ, and enjoy a leisurely walk along the path that surrounds the large outdoor fountain.
The Luther Church was consecrated in April 1886, coinciding with Martin Luther's 400th birthday. A new Lutheran congregation formed with Alfred Jeremias as its first pastor. During Allied air raids in 1944, the church's roof was damaged, and a wooden roof truss was installed in 1955/1956. Following the demolition of Saint Pauline Church in 1968, the Luther Church served the Catholic provost congregation. In the 1970s, the church underwent modifications, including the addition of a new altar, closure of gallery stairwells, and repainting of walls and vaults.
The Luther Church, accommodating 900 seats in the nave and side galleries and space for 80 singers in the choir gallery, is used for special services, baptisms, weddings, and concerts. It also serves the Greek Orthodox parish of Saint George. By 2017, plans were made to redesign the Luther Church into a multifunctional space for the Campus Forum Thomanum by architectural firm Weis & Volkmann, intended to function as a school auditorium, performance, and recording room.
