M50, Shanghai
50 Moganshan Road, also known as "M50," is a contemporary art hub where more than a hundred artists have their studios open to the public. It's often likened to renowned art districts like SoHo in New York and the 798 Art Zone in Beijing. This area has become a popular spot for both local residents and tourists, earning recognition as one of the top ten attractions in Shanghai by Time Magazine.
Formerly the Chunming Slub Mill, 50 Moganshan Road saw its transformation into an art scene starting in 2000, led by local artist Xue Song who was drawn by the affordable rent of the abandoned industrial spaces. Other artists such as Ding Yi, Qu Fengguo, and Wang Xingwei soon joined in. Today, the quarter's old factories and warehouses have been repurposed into galleries, studios, design agencies, and other cultural businesses. The property remains under the ownership of Shangtex, the state-owned textile group that once operated the factory.
M50 is home to over 120 galleries and studios, attracting some of Shanghai's most notable artists like Zhou Tiehai, Ding Yi, Yelan, and the media art collective Liu Dao. Prominent galleries in the area include ShanghART Gallery, EastLink Gallery, island6, Pantocrator Gallery, and Biz Art.
