Maison Saint-Cyr (Saint-Cyr House), Brussels

Maison Saint-Cyr (Saint-Cyr House), Brussels

Rue Archimède guides you toward two pleasant squares – Ambiorix and Marie-Louise – that were carefully landscaped in the 1870s, transforming what was once marshland. By the turn of the century, they had become part of the city's most fashionable neighborhood, featuring the elegant residences of the bourgeoisie, many of which showcased splendid examples of Art Nouveau architecture – though, regrettably, none are presently open to the public.

First on the itinerary is square Ambiorix, which is somewhat overshadowed by contemporary apartment buildings. Nevertheless, don't let that distract you from the magnificent facade of the Saint-Cyr House, an Art Nouveau masterpiece and the former residence of the painter Georges de Saint-Cyr. Built over a mere two-year span and completed in 1903, this house is remarkably slender, measuring a mere 4 meters (13 feet) in width; however, its delicate balconies and swirling window frames make an extravagant artistic statement. The main entrance and the three French doors on the facade are adorned with artistically crafted light blue wooden strips, which not only invite light and air but also maintain privacy. The round window at the top adds a decorative and blooming touch, a characteristic feature of the Art Nouveau style. Likewise, the extravagant wrought ironwork that surrounds the front yard and first floor reflects strong Art Nouveau influences. Modestly, Saint-Cyr remarked, "I daresay I have commissioned one of the most beautiful houses on the square", and he had a point. Some describe it as a "hummingbird among the pigeons", highlighting its unique contrast with the larger structures around the square.

Tips:
Traveling down avenue Palmerston, you'll encounter the Villa Germaine at No. 24, featuring striking floral-patterned tiles and multicolored bricks. Further down the street, near the intersection, three elegantly understated buildings designed by Victor Horta await. No. 2 is a charming corner house with a delicately carved, fluted stone facade, completed a few years after the neighboring No. 4, which boasts a functional design with riveted cast-iron elements softened by arched lintels and mosaics. Together, they are known as the Hôtel van Eetvelde. Lastly, across the street at No. 3, you'll find an austere facade with white and grey stone trimmings that lead to an exuberant side entrance.
