Majestic Theatre, New York
Situated among the renowned Broadway theaters of the Great White Way, the Majestic Theatre holds a prominent position along the illustrious 10-block line of playhouses in Manhattan. Throughout its history, this iconic theater has witnessed the ascent of countless legendary performers and hosted celebrated productions, with "The Phantom of the Opera" becoming inseparable from its identity. Its historical significance is further affirmed by its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, solidifying its status as a cherished landmark within the vibrant tapestry of New York City.
Originally unveiled in 1927, the Majestic Theatre was the brainchild of architect Herbert J. Krapp, commissioned by the esteemed Chanin Brothers, prominent real estate developers of that era. The theater's exterior facade exudes a striking Spanish Moorish style, while the interior showcases the grace of neo-classical architecture. Notably, the design incorporated a democratic stadium plan, with the balcony positioned above the lobby rather than overhanging the orchestra, allowing patrons from all backgrounds to enter the auditorium through the same entrance. During the Great Depression, the Chanin Brothers sold the Majestic Theatre to the Shubert Brothers, who continue to be its owners to this day.
The Majestic Theatre faced the temporary closure on March 12, 2020, due to the devastating impact of COVID-19 restrictions. However, it triumphantly reopened its doors on October 22, 2021, with the resumption of "The Phantom of the Opera" and a joyous celebration outside the theater. Despite challenges in regaining pre-pandemic attendance levels, the musical showcased remarkable resilience, though its substantial operating costs posed an ongoing obstacle. As a result, the production's producers announced in September 2022 that "The Phantom of the Opera" would conclude its storied run on February 18, 2023, shortly after commemorating its 35th anniversary. The announcement spurred a surge in attendance, culminating in a record-breaking gross of $2.2 million during the week of November 21, 2022. Consequently, the closing date was extended to April 16, 2023, with "The Phantom of the Opera" having achieved a remarkable run of 13,981 performances at the time of its final curtain call.
