Malmö Konsthall (Malmö Art Gallery), Malmo
Malmö Art Gallery, known locally as Malmö Konsthall, is a premier exhibition hall situated in the heart of Malmo. Designed by the renowned architect Klas Anshelm (1914–1980), the gallery is celebrated as one of Europe’s largest venues for contemporary art. Inspired by the studio of sculptor Constantin Brâncuși in Paris, Anshelm’s design, completed between 1971 and 1974, employs concrete, glass, wood, and aluminum to create a unique architectural blend. The gallery’s ceiling features domed structures that incorporate both natural and artificial light, including a large sloping skylight that admits soft northern light—an element that lends the space its distinctive ambiance. In recognition of its innovative design, Malmö Konsthall was awarded the prestigious Kasper Salin Prize by the Swedish Association of Architects in 1974.
A major renovation in 1994 expanded the space, connecting it to the neighboring Hantverkshuset (Craft Building), which now houses a bookshop, a children’s area, and a restaurant offering traditional Swedish cuisine. This update allowed the gallery to enhance its visitor experience by providing additional facilities for art-related activities and relaxation.
Malmö Konsthall hosts around ten different exhibitions each year, featuring a mix of modern art classics and experimental works from contemporary artists. Over 200,000 visitors come annually to view pieces from prominent names such as Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh, Louise Bourgeois, and David Shrigley. Past exhibitions have also showcased the works of Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Giovanni Giacometti, Keith Haring, Andres Serrano, Peter Greenaway, and Tony Cragg. Beyond visual art, the gallery also serves as a venue for theater performances, film screenings, and lectures, and runs numerous educational programs for adults and children alike.
