Manchester One (Portland Tower), Manchester
Manchester One, formerly known as Portland Tower and originally Saint Andrew's House is a notable high-rise building located on Portland Street in Manchester. This building stands out as one of the early high-rise structures constructed in the United Kingdom during the 1960s, reaching a height of 77 meters (250 feet). Originally built as Saint Andrew's House, it was later renamed Portland Tower in the 1990s due to its location, and then received its current name, Manchester One, in November 2012.
Owned by Bruntwood, Manchester One is primarily used as office space. It was one of Manchester's tallest buildings upon completion and played a colorful role during the 2002 Commonwealth Games; the west side of the tower was painted bright yellow and featured the event's logo, contributing to the city's vibrant atmosphere during the games.
The building has undergone renovations as part of the broader regeneration efforts within Manchester city center, helping to modernize the tower and maintain its relevance in the evolving urban landscape. Today, Manchester One continues to be a significant fixture in Manchester’s skyline, reflecting both its historical roots and its adaptation to contemporary needs.
