Manila Chinese Cemetery, Manila

Manila Chinese Cemetery, Manila

The Manila Chinese Cemetery, the second oldest burial ground in Manila, Philippines, after La Loma Cemetery, holds significant cultural and historical importance. Spanning approximately 54 hectares, its design reflects a mix of cultural traditions, accommodating Christian, Buddhist, and Taoist burials. The layout of the cemetery, along with its architecture, mirrors its extensive history and its diverse community. The older section, dating back to before the war, has a less structured road network, while the post-war section features a more organized layout with major roads intersected by minor ones, mostly running northwest to southeast.

The main thoroughfare of the cemetery, Matandang Sora, stretches from the main entrance at Felix Huertas to the Chong Hock Temple, serving as the central pathway. Historically, entrances were positioned along Avenida Rizal, directing focus towards the northwestern part, recognized for its historical significance.

Throughout Philippine history, the Manila Chinese Cemetery has witnessed crucial moments, notably during World War II, serving as the site of execution for notable figures like Josefa Llanes Escoda, Vicente Lim, Rafael Roces, Manuel Arguilla, Virgilio Lobregat, and Chinese Consul General Yang Guangsheng. Additionally, it was once the resting place of Apolinario Mabini until his remains were moved to Batangas in 1956.

Today, the Manila Chinese Cemetery not only serves as a burial ground but also stands as a symbol of the Philippines' rich cultural heritage and complex history. Its transformation from a simple cemetery to a historical landmark preserves the legacies of individuals who have shaped the nation's trajectory.

Intramuros, Manila’s old walled Spanish town, stood for 350 years before World War II came, and still houses many of the historic buildings.
