Marc Chagall Stained Glass Windows, Jerusalem

Marc Chagall Stained Glass Windows, Jerusalem

If you have a passion for art, it's worth making a special trip to Hadassah Ein Kerem, renowned globally for its groundbreaking medical research. Here, you'll find the celebrated Chagall Stained Glass, a series of twelve magnificent arched windows adorning the hospital's synagogue. Created by the Russian-Jewish artist Marc Chagall in 1960-61, these windows are considered some of his finest work in stained glass, and can be admired for free upon entering the hospital lobby.

Chagall described these windows as his "modest gift to the Jewish people", and they have recently undergone renovation. Each window symbolizes one of the twelve tribes of Israel, with Chagall masterfully incorporating traditional symbols, precious stones, and societal roles associated with each tribe into his vibrant imagery and choice of colors.

The journey to Hadassah through the Jerusalem forest offers breathtaking scenery, and the hospital itself boasts numerous other art installations generously donated by artists and supporters. Nearby Ein Kerem also offers a wealth of fascinating attractions, along with a diverse selection of excellent dining and drinking establishments.
