Marinid Tombs, Fes

Marinid Tombs, Fes

Perched on the northern hillside overlooking the old medina, the Marinid Tombs stand as majestic ruins, offering a breathtaking view of Fes. The best time to visit is at dusk when the setting sun bathes the city in golden hues. From this vantage point, you can marvel at the numerous monuments of Fes, including the minarets of mosques, the green pyramid roofs of the Kairaouine complex, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss II. On either side of the old medina, cemeteries ascend the hillsides, while on clear nights, the distant outline of the Middle Atlas mountains becomes visible.

Dating back to the 13th-century Merenid era, these massive tombs are believed to be the final resting place of royalty or other prominent figures, though their exact occupants remain a mystery. What is undeniable, however, is the stunning panoramic view they offer.

Tip:
To reach the tombs, it's best to take a "petit taxi" through Bab Guissa near Seffarine Square. The taxi ride should cost around 5 Dirham, but it's advisable to pay extra for the taxi to wait for you, ensuring a safe return to the medina after dark. While the distance between the tombs and the medina is relatively short, note that the walk can be perilous, with instances of muggings reported during both day and night.

Fes New Town Walking Tour

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.
