Marion County Courthouse, Indianapolis

Marion County Courthouse, Indianapolis

The Marion County Courthouse stands as a striking symbol of modernism in Indianapolis. Completed in 1962, it was the tallest high-rise in the city at the time. This 28-story International Style building, rising to 113 meters, is characterized by its clean, rectangular design of concrete, steel, and glass. Two lower wings, each measuring 30 meters, extend from the main structure, adding to its architectural balance.

Facing north, the courthouse features a prominent overhanging entrance, while its horizontal window bands emphasize the sleek, cubical form. The west wing contrasts with its six-story height and vertical window dividers, adding subtle variation to the design. Topping it all is an observation deck on the top floor, accessible via a dedicated elevator, offering panoramic views of the city.

The courthouse houses key government offices, including those of the City of Indianapolis, as well as the County Circuit Court and the County Superior Court of the 13th Judicial District. Marion County, established in 1821 and named after Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, has a rich judicial history. The first courthouse was crafted by John E. Baker and James Paxton, while the second, constructed in 1877, was designed by Isaac M. Hodgson.

Today, the Marion County Courthouse remains a vital hub for governance and a testament to mid-20th-century architectural innovation.
