Maschsee Lake, Hanover (must see)
The lake that sits south of Hannover was created in a large valley of the River Leine. The project was first conceived in the late 1800s but didn't come to fruition until the 1930s.
The lake is a major recreation center for the city at large. Every year over two million visitors come for Maschseefest, a multi-week festival held on the lake's shores.
Additionally, you will find water sports clubs for sailing or rowing all around the lake. Electric tour boats operate on the lake during the summer, and Maschsee Beach is popular for swimming and sunbathing. When the lake freezes and the ice becomes more than 13 centimeters (5.1 inches) thick during the winter, the lake is opened up for ice skating and hockey.
You don't have to get wet to enjoy Maschsee. A trail around the lake's perimeter stretches six kilometers (3.7 miles). There is a paved path for cycling and skating and a walking and jogging path. Many of the city's other foot and cycling paths lead to the lake and connect to this network.
Around the lake, you'll find many beautiful green spaces to enjoy. Many have art installations and sculptures. Maschsee is near many of the top spots in the city, such as the New City Hall and the Lower Saxony State Museum. You'll also find a wide selection of restaurants and cafes with lakeside views.
