Matagarup Bridge, Perth
The Matagarup Bridge is a suspension footbridge that spans across the Swan River in Perth, Western Australia. It's located roughly halfway between Heirisson Island and the Goongoongup Bridge, serving as a pathway for pedestrians between Burswood and East Perth. This connection allows people to easily access the Burswood Peninsula, including the Perth Stadium, from public transportation and parking areas in East Perth and the central business district of Perth.
The bridge's structure is designed to resemble two flying swans, with its arches resembling wishbones. However, it can also be interpreted as resembling a swimming dolphin, a Wagyl serpent, or a ribbon. Additionally, the bridge is illuminated by 900 meters (about 3,000 feet) of multicolored LED lighting.
Modifications were made to the bridge's design to allow for recreational activities like bridge climbing. These modifications included adding handrails along the wishbones and constructing a viewing platform. The original structural design already included stairs for inspection and maintenance purposes. Plans were also considered for installing a zip-line from the top of the bridge to the ground, and eventually, both attractions were approved to proceed. The bridge climb, operated by Perth Bridge Climb and Zip, opened on January 26, 2021, while the zip-line from the bridge to the Burswood Peninsula opened in December 2021 after facing several delays.
