MATOU - Musée de l'Affiche de Toulouse (Toulouse Poster Museum), Toulouse
Located in the Saint-Cyprien district of Toulouse, the Poster Museum (Musée de l'Affiche), or MATOU, is a unique cultural institution dedicated to the art of posters and graphic design. Originally established in 1983 as the Municipal Center for Posters, Postcards, and Graphic Art, it underwent several transformations before being renamed MATOU in 2015.
The museum is housed in 18th-century buildings on Charles-de-Fitte Alley, a space it moved to during its inception in 1983. MATOU's collections are extensive, comprising over 200,000 items that continue to grow annually. The array of documents includes posters—with fourteen originals by Toulouse-Lautrec—postcards, vignettes, labels, enameled plaques, and a variety of other graphic supports. Notably, the museum holds historical pieces like 282 razor blade packages, 991 advertising blotters, and 1192 labels. Its extensive archive also encompasses cinema trailers and commercials from 1904 to 1968, with the oldest collections dating back to 1650.
The museum underwent significant redevelopment and expansion, reopening in April 2017 with new spaces, including a boutique promoting local artists and products related to its temporary exhibitions. This expansion allowed MATOU to host three temporary exhibitions annually, significantly enriching its cultural offerings.
In 2020, a pivotal development occurred when MATOU's collections were linked with those of the Paul-Dupuy Museum of Precious Arts (Musée des Arts Précieux Paul-Dupuy), also renowned for its significant graphic arts collection. This collaboration marked a transformation of MATOU into a broader exhibition space, expanding its focus beyond solely posters.
