Mayfair Theatre, Ottawa
The Mayfair Theatre, situated in Ottawa, is the city's oldest operational cinema, having been in business since 1932. It distinguishes itself as an independent repertory theater, showcasing a diverse selection of independent, second-run, and timeless films. One of its notable characteristics is the presentation of double features and frequent screenings of cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Room.
The Mayfair is a remarkable example of Spanish Revival cinema architecture, the second of its kind in Ottawa. It features imitation balconies, stained-glass windows, a proscenium arch, a painted ceiling, decorative plasterwork, and wrought iron elements. The theater proudly displays the original clock with luminous blue numbering.
In 1986, the theater was renovated with new concession stands, box office spaces, and wider seating. In the 2000s, the Mayfair underwent more renovations under new ownership. Updates included new seating, including some couches in the balcony area, and the incorporation of a digital video projection system, a 16mm projector, a Dolby Digital sound system, and a long play tower system.
Presently, Mayfair Theatre offers a diverse selection of movies, including cult classics, family films, independent movies, premieres, local productions, festivals, and late-night shows. It also serves as the main venue for the Ottawa International Writers Festival, hosting readings and lectures in the spring of 2010. The theater is known for its popular annual Halloween screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
