Meisjeshuis Building, Delft

Meisjeshuis Building was founded at the end of the 14th century by well-known Delft resident Willem Nagel. At that time, the building was called Heilige-Geestzustershuis (Holy Spirit Sister House) and the nurses here took care of sick people. Later on, at the end of the 16th century, the nurse’s house became an orphanage for poor girls. The orphanage had workshops and learning quarters where girls studied religion, crafts, cooking and mathematics. At the end of 18th century the house was remodeled by architect Nicholas Terburgh to feature modern Louis XV architectural details. Since 2005 a part of the building has been occupied by the provincial association for cultural tradition. The other parts of the complex house the Meisjeshuis Club and two associations for knowledge and learning.
