Mercadillo de Ruzafa, Valencia
Located in Valencia's Russafa neighborhood, Ruzafa Market is a bustling hub of food, art, and culture. With its Arabic origins, the name Ruzafa means 'garden,' reflecting its roots as a recreational green space commissioned in the 9th century by Abd Allah al-Balansi during the Balansiya era.
Architect Julio Bellot Senent designed the market building in the brutalist style, showcasing a devotion to concrete. Since its opening in 1962, the market has become an architectural marvel. In 2010, colorful additions transformed the building to represent the diverse range of delicacies inside, mirroring Pantone shades. Spanning 4,780 square meters with over 160 stalls, it's the second largest market in the Valencian Community after Valencia's Central Market. However, unlike the latter, this market maintains an authentic neighborhood ambiance, free from trendy influences.
The market proudly offers an extensive selection of locally sourced products. From fish, which occupy a dedicated area, to pickled vegetables, salted fish, poultry, game, algae, and the finest produce from L'Horta, València's fertile region, the options are diverse. Among the stalls, one particularly intriguing gem stands out: Insectum, a purveyor of edible insects and flowers.
Discover culinary delights at My First Paella, a one-of-a-kind spot in Russafa. Here, you can make a Valencia-style paella using ingredients bought from the market. It's an immersive and memorable experience.
