Mesjid Langgar Tinggi, Jakarta

Mesjid Langgar Tinggi, nestled in Pekojan Village, Tambora District of West Jakarta, is a historical mosque with origins dating back to the 19th century. It was constructed in 1829 AD, as indicated by the date 1249 AH on the mosque's entrance. This mosque began as a 'langgar' or a prayer place atop a guest house along the bustling banks of the Angke River, a key transport and trade route at the time.

The structure was developed by Abu Bakar Shihab, a Yemeni merchant, who initially built the accommodation that featured the langgar above it. In November 1833, Sheikh Sa'id Na'um, a wealthy merchant from Palembang who later became Kapitan Arab of Pekojan, undertook significant renovations. He managed the land donated by Syarifah Mas'ad Barik Ba'alwi, which includes the current mosque site and a public cemetery in Tanah Abang.

The mosque has undergone various renovations since its inception. The lower part, previously used for accommodation, now serves as the residence for mosque administrators and includes commercial spaces. Changes in the environment, such as the silting of the Angke River and increasing pollution, have led to the closure of the river gate, which once provided direct access to the mosque and accommodations.

The Langgar Tinggi Mosque sits on an 8 × 24 meters plot, flanked by Jalan Pekojan and the Kali Angke River. Its architectural style is a unique blend of European, Chinese, and Javanese influences. The structure showcases Tuscan Neoclassical-style pillars reflecting European design, Chinese decorations on beam supports, and a Javanese-inspired basic plan. Moorish influence is evident in the small obelisk-like decorations on the roof.

The mosque's interior features thick wooden flooring, a mihrab, and a historic wooden pulpit from 1859, which was a gift from Palembang in honor of Sa'id Na'um. Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, the DKI Jakarta Government has designated the Langgar Tinggi Mosque as a cultural heritage site, preserving its rich history and diverse architectural influences for future generations.
