MesseTurm, Frankfurt
The MesseTurm, also known as the Trade Fair Tower, stands as the second tallest building not only in Frankfurt but in all of Germany, ranking as the third tallest within the European Union. Its construction was finalized in 1991, and it can be found within the Frankfurt trade fairgrounds. Among the locals, this distinctive building is affectionately referred to as 'the Pencil' due to its slender, elongated shape.
With a towering height of 256 meters and an impressive 60 floors, the MesseTurm is a prominent fixture in the city's skyline and an emblematic representation of Germany's flourishing economy. Its architectural style combines elements of postmodernism and Art Deco. The visionary behind this iconic structure is the German American architect, Helmut Jahn.
The MesseTurm's architectural design is a captivating blend of forms, beginning with a square footprint, ascending as a square structure, transforming into a cylinder, and culminating with a pyramid-shaped summit. Unlike many of Frankfurt's contemporary skyscrapers, this building extensively incorporates red sandstone sourced from the Main River.
Presently, the tower primarily serves as commercial office space and includes additional amenities such as a restaurant and a parking facility capable of accommodating 900 vehicles. A prominent attraction that captivates visitors is the colossal, kinetic sculpture created by American artist Jonathan Borofsky. This remarkable sculpture, standing at 21.5 meters in height, depicts a figure perpetually engaged in the act of hammering and is situated in front of the MesseTurm.
Tip:
The building is especially eye-catching at dusk and after dark.
