Metropolitan Community Church, Richmond
The Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Richmond, situated in the Fan district, is a forward-thinking and inclusive Christian community that warmly embraces members of sexual minorities. Affiliated with the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), MCC Richmond is part of a global movement that started in Rev. Troy Perry's living room in Huntington Park, California, on October 6, 1968. This small gathering was the beginning of a worldwide initiative to provide a spiritual sanctuary for those often excluded by mainstream Christian communities.
The specific history of MCC Richmond began to unfold in the 1970s, with discussions about establishing a church presence in Richmond. The first worship service in Richmond was held on June 11, 1978, following successful efforts by Rev. Frank Scott and Tom Franz to generate local interest. From its modest beginnings with 28 attendees, MCC Richmond has evolved into a dynamic community.
The church is dedicated to being a haven for everyone, regardless of their past, identity, or beliefs. It champions values of love, inclusion, and social justice, addressing issues such as racial, gender, and economic equality, and working to dismantle oppressive systems. Every aspect of the church—from its relaxed dress code to the communal lunches offered after Sunday services—demonstrates its commitment to celebrating diversity.
