Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor

Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor

Michigan Stadium is the football stadium for the University of Michigan. Also known as "The Big House," Michigan Stadium is the largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere. With a capacity of over 100,000, it is also the third largest stadium in the world.

The stadium was built in 1927. It was designed by architect Bernard L. Green who drew inspiration from the Yale Bowl. In order to keep costs lower, the original capacity was 75,000. However, a vision of larger crowds in the future caused the stadium to be designed with footings to expand seating. This has allowed the stadium to continue to grow without the need for demolition.

There have been some renovations over the years. The stadium was renovated in 2010 to ensure ADA compliance and remodel some areas. It was also expanded during this renovation. In addition to 2010, expansion projects took place in 1928, 1949, 1956, 1973, 1992 and 1998.

Many visitors to Ann Arbor wish to tour Michigan Stadium. Tours are sometimes offered, but guests will need to call in advance to make arrangements. The university requests a minimum of two weeks notice for scheduled tours. The stadium is not open for exercising, photography or other drop in activities.

Even without an official tour, the massive stadium is a sight to behold. Visitors should attempt to attend an event at The Big House while they are in the city. Along with football, the stadium hosts soccer games and the university's graduation ceremonies. Ice hockey games are not common at Michigan Stadium, but they do happen on rare occasions.

Why You Should Visit:
To see the largest stadium in the Western Hemisphere and cheer on the Wolverines

Tips:
Do not expect to drop in unannounced to get a tour of this facility. Tours are not guaranteed and must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance.
