Minnewaterpark, Brugge

Minnewater Park in Bruges is a tranquil city park that serves as a key green space and cultural venue in the historic city center. Situated in the southern part of Bruges, adjacent to the iconic Minnewater, a historic water body, the park has evolved significantly over centuries.

Historically, the site of Minnewater Park was used as a bleaching meadow dating back to 1580 and continued to serve this industrial purpose until the early 20th century. During this time, a neo-Gothic castle called Het Fraeyhuis, accompanied by a landscaped garden, was constructed by Ludovic Fraeys de Veubeke. The castle was demolished in 1969, but the porter's house and some lime trees from the garden remain, reflecting the park's layered past.

The area's transformation into a public space began in the 1970s under the initiative of Mayor Michel Van Maele and the city council. They questioned the appropriateness of developing a residential area and instead opted to establish a public park. The city acquired the land in 1974, and the park was designed to serve as a tourist pathway and a recreational green space, incorporating elements from the original Fraeyhuis garden.

Construction of the park began in 1977, and it opened to the public in 1979. It later expanded with the addition of two adjacent properties, further enhancing its size and appeal. The park gained additional prominence in 2002 when Bruges was named the European Capital of Culture, leading to improvements like the establishment of a reception area for tourists at Bargeplein, accessible via a striking bridge that connects directly to Minnewater Park.

The park is accessible from several points including Katelijnevest, Minnewater Street, Arsenaalstraat, and an old gate at Katelijnevest. It hosts the Cactus Festival and Feest in 't Park, popular events that draw large crowds annually.
