Monasterio Profeta Elías (Monastery of Prophet Elias), Santorini
The Monastery of Prophet Elias, located in Santorini, is a significant historical and cultural landmark on the island. Positioned at the highest point of Santorini, at approximately 567 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This monastery, built in 1711, stands out with its fortress-like structure and Cycladic architectural style.
Initially, the Monastery of Prophet Elias played a crucial role in the cultural and educational development of the local population, serving as a school that taught Greek language and literature. Beyond its educational contributions, the monastery also had substantial economic influence, engaging in prosperous trade across the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas with its private ship.
In 1956, the monastery suffered significant damage from a severe earthquake, but it has since been restored and now houses a museum. The museum's collection includes ecclesiastical items, rare handwritten books, Byzantine icons, and sculptures. Visitors can also see displays related to shoemaking, printing, and candlemaking.
While the main monastery is closed to visitors, its impressive bell tower and the four surrounding churches and chapels are accessible. The monastery is home to a few monks who produce traditional goods such as wine, which are available for purchase.
In addition to the monastery, visitors are encouraged to explore the picturesque village of Pyrgos and taste local wines at the nearby Santo Winery. The combination of historical, cultural, and natural beauty makes the Monastery of Prophet Elias a must-visit destination in Santorini.
Why You Should Visit:
Enjoy some peace, with some spectacular far-reaching views in all directions!
Tip:
Do make the trip on a clear day or you might be stuck in the clouds and rain.
Keep in mind that there are a few short hiking trips on the mountaintop, too.
There's also a path going to Perissa (1.5 hrs) and to Ancient Thera (50 mins), which is narrow, steep, and rocky, so if you adventure yourself to do it, make sure you have shoes with a good grip, water, and sunscreen.
The small active military base on top of the hill has an array of aerials so be aware and watch which way you point your camera when taking photos – they can be rather sensitive!
