Monestir de Pedralbes (Monastery of Pedralbes), Barcelona
Founded in 1326 by Queen Elisenda, the Monastery of Pedralbes (named for its original white stones, or "pedres albes") is an extraordinary journey through time, immersing you in monastic life from centuries past to the present. Originally a convent for the Franciscan order of Poor Clares, the magnificent structure boasts a remarkable three-story Gothic cloister, considered one of Europe's finest, which encloses a lush garden.
Immerse yourself in the monastery's tranquil ambience as you explore the arcaded courtyard, where the day cells encircle and witness the nuns' devotion to prayer, sewing, and study each morning. On the right side of the entrance, you'll find the Chapel of Saint Michael ("Capella de Sant Miquel"), the queen's own cell. Inside, the walls are adorned with captivating murals by renowned Catalan artist Ferrer Bassa, depicting the "Passion and the Life of the Virgin" in three distinct panels. Keep an eye out for the touching message, "Joan no m'oblides" ("John, do not forget me"), etched between the figures of Saint Francis and Saint Clare and attributed to a devoted novice.
Venturing upstairs to the nuns' dormitory, you'll find a treasure trove of the convent's most precious possessions, including paintings, liturgical ornaments, pottery, and a collection spanning 7 centuries of artistic and cultural heritage. Temporary exhibitions are often displayed in this space, offering additional delights for visitors. In the refectory, where the Poor Clares observed silence during their meals, stands a pulpit used for readings, while inscriptions on the walls remind visitors of the importance of silence, listening, and contemplation of our mortality. As an aside, a fading mural in the corner and broken paving tiles serve as reminders of the tumultuous Napoleonic occupation in 1809.
Tip:
After visiting the monastery, make sure to explore the nearby park, located just 100 meters away, which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city.
