Montpellier Zoological Park, Montpellier
The Montpellier Zoological Park (Parc Zoologique de Lunaret) is one of the largest and most captivating zoological parks in France. Situated just north of Montpellier in the Occitanie region, this expansive park spans over 80 hectares (198 acres) and provides a sanctuary for a diverse array of wildlife. Since its opening in 1964, the zoo has evolved into a safari-like environment, with open enclosures that allow most of its 1,350 animals to roam freely, offering visitors an immersive experience.
Home to 141 species, including zebras, lions, lizards, and exotic birds, the Montpellier Zoo is not only a beloved destination for family outings but also a prime location for nature enthusiasts. Its 52 spacious enclosures, among the largest in Europe, feature two lakes that add to the park’s serene atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.
A standout attraction within the zoo is its greenhouse, inaugurated in 2007. With a footprint of 2,600 square meters, the greenhouse replicates seven different climatic zones and habitats. Visitors can witness an artificial rainforest rainstorm every two hours, further enhancing the authenticity of the environment. Housing over 500 animals and 8,000 plants across 300 species, the greenhouse is home to fascinating creatures such as anacondas, armadillos, tamarins, and ocelots, while the plant collection includes species like Anthurium ferrierense, Philodendron panduriforme, and Vriesea carinata.
The Montpellier Zoological Park is not only a center for recreation and education but also a valuable resource for the conservation of biodiversity. Its naturalistic setting and varied collection make it a perfect destination for a family day out and a must-visit attraction in the city of Montpellier.
