Monument au Général Leclerc, Strasbourg

Monument au Général Leclerc, Strasbourg

The Monument to General Leclerc, which symbolizes heroism and liberation, proudly stands in the Broglie Square, in Strasbourg. This notable monument has become an essential part of the city's history. It was unveiled on November 25, 1951, to honor the decisive charge that liberated Strasbourg on November 23, 1944.

Philippe Leclerc, the renowned French general from World War II, is forever remembered in Strasbourg's collective memory through this monument. The impressive sculpture adorning the monument was crafted by Georges Saupique (1889-1961). His artistic skill captured the essence of General Leclerc and the spirit of his division's triumphant advance into the city.

At the core of the monument stands Leclerc, depicted in commanding bronze. His presence exudes leadership and strength, reflecting the inspiration he provided to his troops during their march towards liberation. On both sides of him are two Victories, symbolic figures representing triumph and victory. They pay homage to the accomplishments of the 2nd Armored Division and their successful liberation efforts.

The base of the monument features the impactful words of the Koufra oath. In 1941, General Leclerc pledged to keep fighting until the tricolor flag once again flew over Strasbourg Cathedral. This solemn pledge echoes through time, reminding all who see it of the unwavering determination that fueled General Leclerc and his division.
