Moorfoot Building, Sheffield

Moorfoot Building, Sheffield

The Moorfoot Building is a prominent office complex located in Sheffield. Designed in the form of a step pyramid, it occupies a significant position at the foot of The Moor, a major pedestrianized shopping street, and lies close to the Sheffield Inner Ring Road. The construction of the building in the late 20th century altered the historical continuity of The Moor, which previously extended across Saint Mary's Gate onto London Road.

Opened in July 1981, the Moorfoot Building is structured around three main wings: the East Wing, the West Wing, and the North Wing. The building originally featured floors numbered in the American style, starting with the ground floor designated as the First Floor. Among its initial facilities were a staff restaurant and bar located on the second floor, and a full-sized squash court situated in the basement.

To comply with planning conditions, the building was designed with a pedestrian route to replace a traditional path from London Road to The Moor. This route included a ramp at Young Street and South Lane, a tunnel section through the building, and a glazed roof over part of the East Wing, exiting above the car park and descending to The Moor. However, since the adjacent development, now the Premier Inn hotel, was never completed, the pedestrian access through the Moorfoot Building was never finished or opened to the public.
