Moyo, Johannesburg

Moyo, Johannesburg

The Moyo restaurant located at Melrose Arch is widely recognized as one of Johannesburg's most famous dining establishments. It is one of four restaurants owned by the founder, Jason Lurie, with additional Moyo branches at the Market Theatre, Zoo Lake, and Spier in Cape Town.

The Melrose Arch location, which opened its doors in 2002, is an upscale, late-night eatery that can accommodate up to 600 patrons. This restaurant offers a diverse range of entertainment, including performances by storytellers and mime artists. Upon arrival, diners are greeted by attendants who provide bowls of water for handwashing and later offer face painting.

The restaurant primarily serves African cuisine, drawing inspiration from various regions of the continent, resulting in a menu rich in flavors and spices. The Moroccan tent-style decor adds a unique ambiance, featuring mud and straw walls that contribute to the overall appeal of African cuisine, decor, and music.

Moyo Melrose Arch is renowned for its signature dish: flamed lamb fillet stuffed with spinach, mozzarella, and peppadew. Other popular menu items include lamb chops, chicken tagine, fish curry, grilled ostrich fillet, and springbok shanks.

For those with a preference for vegetarian options, the menu includes the Nile roast vegetable salad, a delightful combination of cumin-infused hummus and grilled Egyptian gebna cheese served with salad greens, roasted peppers, aubergines, and courgettes, accompanied by a tahini dressing. Additionally, a vegetable tagine is available daily for vegetarians to enjoy.
