Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna (Museum of Modern Art), Bologna

On the northwestern fringe of the city center, the Bologna Modern Art Museum (MAMbo) occupies the premises of a former municipal bakery, which served as a vital source of bread for locals during the First World War. Today, MAMbo is an integral part of the new cultural complex known as Manufacture of Arts ("Manifattura delle Arti"), a redevelopment project that repurposed the city's old harbor and industrial zone.

Offering a manageable space and affordable entry fees, MAMbo provides detailed explanations of each artwork in both Italian and English, featuring rotating temporary exhibitions alongside a permanent collection that traces the evolution of Italian art from World War II to the present day. Additionally, MAMbo serves as the temporary residence of the Morandi Museum, relocated from the Accursio Palace in the city center while its galleries undergo restoration.

Georgio Morandi (1890–1964), renowned as one of the preeminent still-life painters of modern times, is showcased prominently within this collection. Spanning his early works influenced by Cézanne, his atmospheric landscapes, and his iconic depictions of bottles and bowls, the collection offers insight into Morandi's artistic journey. Particularly noteworthy are his landscapes portraying the Bolognese hills, where the artist sought solace amidst the turmoil of Fascism.
