Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art), Salvador
Established on August 10, 1959, as the first university museum in Bahia, this museum houses a rare and precious collection of Christian sacred art, located in one of the most outstanding Brazilian architectural ensembles from the 17th century: the former Convent of Santa Teresa. From the 146 windows of the museum, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the entire Bay of All Saints, from the Island of Itaparica to the Island of Maré.
The temple's interior features a single nave with reinforced vaulted ceilings supported by stone arches. The choir is situated above, supported by ribbed vaults and an almost flat arch, a common feature of 17th-century Luso-Brazilian architecture. The confessionals were integrated into the building to allow priests to hear confessions without leaving their cloister. In addition to the church, sacristy, choir, chapel, dining room, chapter room, and library, the complex includes 16 halls, 12 rooms, 10 cells, long corridors, galleries, and two stone staircases with 17th-century tile panels on the walls.
