Museum Barberini, Potsdam

The Museum Barberini in Potsdam is an art museum that opened in 2017, focusing on Impressionist paintings and featuring a wide range of exhibitions from Old Masters to contemporary art. It primarily showcases the art collection of its founder, Hasso Plattner, and hosts three major temporary exhibitions annually, with works loaned from international museums and private collections. Additionally, the museum offers ongoing "art histories" gallery displays that reinterpret the collection, providing fresh insights for visitors.

The Museum Barberini showcases Plattner's collection of GDR art alongside special exhibitions. In its inaugural year, 2017, the museum hosted four major shows with international collaborations, featuring loans from renowned museums like the State Hermitage, Musée d’Orsay, and the National Gallery of Art. The exhibitions were "Modern Classics," "Impressionism: The Art of Landscape," "From Hopper to Rothko: America’s Road to Modern Art," and "Behind the Mask: Artists in the GDR." The latter highlighted the often-overlooked GDR art, displaying over 100 works by about 80 artists in various media.

In 2018, the Barberini hosted a Max Beckmann retrospective, the first to explore his view of the world as a stage, featuring over 110 works from major institutions like the Harvard Art Museums, MoMA, and Tate Modern, many rarely seen in Europe. Another key exhibition, "Gerhard Richter: Abstraction," developed with the artist, displayed about 80 works from international collections, examining themes of abstraction, representation, and the use of photography, color, and overpainting in Richter's work from the 1960s onward.

The Museum Barberini is committed to offering a diverse program of events and educational activities, complemented by digital initiatives like the Barberini App and the 4K Smart Wall in the museum, enhancing the visitor experience through innovative technology.

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more
