Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden
The word, "Lakenhal" means "Cloth Hall." The Lakenhal was built in 1640 by Arent van Gravesande as guild hall for cloth merchants. The cloth industry declined in Leiden. In 1874 the Lakenhal was reborn as a municipal museum. The museum soon became a repository for art and artifacts of Leiden including stained glass windows by Willem Thibaut.
The permanent display in the old inspection room of the museum includes four large paintings by Isaac van Swanenburg on the cloth industry. Carel de Moor has a huge over-the-mantle piece showing cloth inspectors at work. The museum has a very respectable collection of paintings of the Dutch Golden Age.
Speaking of the Golden Age, Rembrandt van Rijn is represented at the Lakenhal. Works from Rembrandt's early years were among the museum's collection.
