Museum of Archaeology, Almaty
The Museum of Archaeology in Almaty is a vital institution showcasing the rich historical and archaeological heritage of the country. It was established as part of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and has played a crucial role in safeguarding and presenting the extensive archaeological discoveries that shed light on Kazakhstan's ancient and medieval history.
The museum's origins reflect the persistent efforts of Kazakh scientists over several decades, starting from the 1920s, which led to the unearthing of invaluable artifacts throughout Kazakhstan. Officially inaugurated in 1973 under the leadership of Dinmukhamed Kunaev, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, the museum received significant support from prominent Kazakh scientists such as Alkey Margulan, Akay Nusupbekov, K. A. Akishev, H. A. Alpysbaev, M. K. Kadyrbaev, A. G. Maksimova, and K. A. Baypakov. Together, they aimed to establish a repository for the nation's heritage and foster ongoing archaeological research.
In 2012, the Museum of Archaeology underwent extensive restoration and relocation to the Gylym Ordasy complex within the premises of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, signaling a new phase in its mission to conserve and explore Kazakhstan's historical legacy.
The museum's initial collection owes much to the groundbreaking work of Alkey Margulan, who led the Central Kazakhstan archaeological expedition in 1946. This expedition unearthed a vast trove of artifacts from the late Bronze Age Begazy-Dandybai culture, forming a cornerstone of the museum's exhibits upon its establishment.
Today, the Museum of Archaeology not only preserves ancient relics but also actively engages in the archaeological community. It continually adds discoveries from across the country, enriching its exhibitions spanning from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages. A notable feature is the carefully reconstructed burial chamber of mound number 11 from Altai Berel, offering visitors insight into ancient burial practices and the skilled craftsmanship of Kazakhstan's ancestors.

Almaty Introduction Walking Tour
Nursultan Nazarbayev, the former (and the first) President of Kazakhstan, once remarked: "Almaty is the pearl of Kazakhstan, the most beautiful city in Central Asia." Indeed, the country's largest metropolis, Almaty is like a butterfly that has emerged from its cocoon, spreading its wings and soaring towards the sky at the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains.
