Museum of Ethnography, Stockholm
The Museum of Ethnography in Stockholm is a science museum dedicated to the study of ethnography and cultural anthropology. Located in Museiparken at Gärdet, the museum houses an extensive collection of approximately 220,000 items representing the diverse cultures of peoples from around the world, including regions such as China, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, and Africa. Since 1999, the museum has been part of the Swedish National Museums of World Culture and also hosts the Sven Hedin Foundation.
The museum's collections are notable for their historical depth, with some of the oldest items originating from the Swedish colony of New Sweden and the Cook expeditions in the 18th century. However, the majority of the artifacts were acquired between 1850 and 1950, a period heavily influenced by colonial explorations, evangelizations, and trade.
In its history, the museum has undergone several name changes, most notably to Folkens Museum in 1988, before reverting to its original name in 2001, following the formation of the National Museums of World Culture. The museum is also recognized for its efforts in repatriation, such as the 2007 return of a totem pole to the Haisla Nation, which was taken in 1929. The Haisla Nation provided the museum with a contemporary replica, which is now displayed outside the museum's entrance.
Today, the museum remains committed to preserving and showcasing its artifacts, which are considered national property, ensuring they are accessible for public education and cultural enrichment.
