Museumsquartier, Vienna

The Museumsquartier (MQ) is a vast 90,000 square meter area situated in Vienna's 7th district. It's an intriguing blend of Baroque-style buildings and modern architecture designed by the architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner (known as Ortner & Ortner Baukunst). The transformation of the former court stables began in April 1998 and culminated in the opening of the Museumsquartier in two phases, in June and September 2001.

MQ boasts a diverse array of cultural offerings, ranging from significant art museums like the Leopold Museum and the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna) to contemporary exhibition spaces like the Kunsthalle Wien. It's also a hub for various festivals, notably the Wiener Festwochen, an annual summer event headquartered at the MuseumsQuartier Wien.

There are other notable attractions within MQ, including the Tanzquartier, a cutting-edge dance center, and the Architekturzentrum Wien. It also provides production studios for new media, artist residencies, cultural facilities tailored for children, and a plethora of events and festivals such as the renowned Viennale film festival, ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival, Coded Cultures, Techno Sensual, among others. The Museumsquartier is also home to Quartier21, which houses approximately 60 alternative art groups, including eSeL.

Since 2002, an artist-in-residence program has welcomed over 735 artists to MuseumsQuartier, offering them studio spaces to work and live. This program is a collaborative effort involving tranzit.org / ERSTE Stiftung, the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, and the Research Institute for Arts and Technology.
