Muzeum Narodowe (National Museum), Poznan
The National Museum is among the oldest, largest, and most significant museums in the country, serving as a custodian of cultural heritage and a repository of knowledge, passion, and effort invested by generations of individuals who contributed to its collections. The museum's origins date back to the mid-19th century, and it has played a pivotal role in preserving Poland's cultural heritage. It was officially established as the Museum of Greater Poland in 1919, following Poland's regained independence.
The museum building comprises two parts-the old and the new. The old section dates from 1904, while the new section was added in 2001. The exhibition is housed in both the old and new parts of the museum's building, showcasing Polish art, European art, Polish Middle Ages and Baroque, and antiquities.
The museum's holdings are the result of a merger of Polish and Prussian collections. These include the collections of the Museum of Slavic Antiquities, the donation of Seweryn Mielżyński to the Poznań Society of Friends of Science, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, and the Berlin collection of Atanazy Raczyński.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum is home to several specialized collections, including the Poster and Design Gallery, the Print Cabinet, and the Numismatic Cabinet. These collections are occasionally featured in temporary exhibitions.
The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that provide visitors with fresh perspectives on various aspects of art, culture, and history. The temporary exhibition area is accessible from the new building.
