Mystery Spot, Santa Cruz

Mystery Spot, Santa Cruz (must see)

The Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz is an intriguing tourist attraction that has captivated visitors since its opening in 1939 by George Prather. Located near the city of Santa Cruz, this site is renowned for its fascinating optical illusions and gravity-defying phenomena, housed primarily within a distinctively tilted wooden building.

Classified as a gravity hill, the Mystery Spot presents a tilt-induced visual illusion, making it the first such attraction of its kind in California. As visitors traverse the short, steep uphill path and enter the slanted building, they experience a range of peculiar optical effects. These effects include seeing balls that appear to roll uphill and observing people leaning at extreme angles without falling over. The illusion intensifies due to the environment and the building's 20-degree tilt, which alters visitors' perception of height and orientation. Objects and individuals inside the room seem distorted as the sloped floors and walls create a disorienting visual effect.

Even when visitors are outside on what seems to be level ground, the tilted structure in the background skews their judgment of heights and angles. Professor William Prinzmetal from Berkeley explains that these visual distortions are exacerbated when the perceiver's body is also tilted, enhancing the impact on visual perception significantly. This can lead to a situation where other senses diminish in sensitivity while visual senses become more acute, contributing to the surreal experience of the site.

While the scientific explanation for the phenomena rests on the illusion created by the tilted environment, local tour guides often playfully suggest fantastical reasons for the Mystery Spot's peculiarities. These include stories of ancient meteors creating a magical circle or an unusual electromagnetic field that supposedly affects the area and deters wildlife. However, these explanations are more for entertainment than based on scientific evidence.

The Mystery Spot remains a popular destination for those intrigued by optical illusions, gravity hills, and the playful blend of nature's anomalies with human perception, making it a unique and memorable part of California's roadside attractions.

Apart from surfboard-filled shores, Santa Cruz is also rich in history reflected in the old buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While none of Santa Cruz's historic architecture sprang up overnight, a great deal of it was lost, or severely damaged, in a single go on October 17, 1989 as a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Still, some of the historic buildings have...  view more
