Nairobi Arboretum, Nairobi
Most cities do not have 30 hectares of woodlands close to the city center, but then Nairobi is not most cities. The arboretum, just across from the State House, is a green lung in the city that provides shaded walks, running trails and picnic spots. It was established in 1907 to trial the growth of forestry trees in Kenya and was made a national reserve in 1932. At the time there was a grave need for fast growing trees for timber to fire up the steam engines of the Kenya Uganda Railway. As you wander through the reserve you will see more than 350 different species of Kenyan and exotic trees and plants that are home to an amazing array of bird species, butterflies, monkeys and other wildlife.
On weekends, you can often find activities and games taking place for the public, thanks to the Friends of Nairobi Arboretum group. Facilities, such as the bathrooms, trails and benches, are well maintained, making it a popular destination for families to relax. In addition to the walking trails, there is a maze, which is great fun for all the family to get lost in. The Nairobi Aboretum is open every day to the public free of charge.
