Nashville City Cemetery, Nashville
The Nashville City Cemetery, established as the city's earliest public burial ground, has been a part of Nashville since January 1, 1822. It's a resting place for many notable figures from the city's history. By the mid-19th century, the cemetery had over 11,000 burials, and in 1958, Mayor Ben West initiated a project to restore and maintain this historical site. Its significance in history and architecture earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
The cemetery is the final resting place for a diverse group of people including two founders of Nashville, four generals from the Confederate army, a Tennessee Governor, and twenty-two Nashville mayors.
