National Bank of Serbia, Belgrade

National Bank of Serbia, Belgrade

The National Bank of Serbia, headquartered in Belgrade, serves as the primary financial institution of the country. Its origins trace back to 1884 when it was founded as the Privileged National Bank of the Kingdom of Serbia, reflecting Serbia's storied history through various political and economic transformations. The bank has continuously operated since its establishment on July 2, 1884, marked by its issuance of the first promissory note.

The bank's central duties include managing the country's monetary policy, having the exclusive right to issue Serbian banknotes and coins, safeguarding price stability, and promoting the overall stability of Serbia's financial system. As an independent entity, the National Bank of Serbia operates autonomously, guided by legal statutes, and is accountable to the National Assembly of Serbia. Its paramount goal is to maintain price stability, which it prioritizes above its secondary aim of bolstering the financial system's strength.

In 2003, it succeeded the National Bank of Yugoslavia, indicating a historical continuity amidst the changing national landscapes. The bank's current premises on Kralja Petra Street, in the heart of Belgrade, are housed in a building completed between 1888 and 1890. This building was constructed following the model of the Belgian National Bank.

Additionally, a new headquarters on Slavija Square, designed by architect Grujo Golijanin for the National Bank of Yugoslavia, started construction in the early 1990s but faced delays due to financial and political upheavals. Construction resumed in the 2000s, and the building was officially opened in 2006, further solidifying the bank's central role in Serbia's economic framework.
