National Council of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava
The National Council of the Slovak Republic serves as Slovakia's national parliament and operates from Bratislava. This unicameral legislative body comprises 150 members who are elected every four years through universal suffrage, employing a proportional representation system.
Strategically situated in Alexander Dubček Square, adjacent to the iconic Bratislava Castle on Castle Hill, the primary parliament building reflects the architectural influences typical of the Soviet era, a time when Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia. The building was initially constructed to serve as the Federal Parliament during the Czechoslovak period starting in 1986, but the collapse of Czechoslovakia led to its reassignment to the Slovak parliament. Due to its design for a different purpose and time, the building is noted for being insufficient in size to accommodate all officials and representatives.
In addition to the main parliament building, the secondary parliament site, known as the Zhupa House, is located at Župné Square next to the Trinitarian Church below Castle Hill. This site functioned as the main parliament building until 1994 and added to the administrative capabilities of the Slovak legislative body.
The National Council has been called by this name since October 1, 1992, following its earlier incarnation as the Slovak National Council when Slovakia was still part of Czechoslovakia from 1969 to 1992. The council is vested with significant powers including the approval of domestic legislation, constitutional laws, and the national budget. It also plays a critical role in ratifying international treaties, approving military operations, and electing officials to some executive and judicial positions as outlined by Slovak law.
