National Gandhi Museum (Gandhi Memorial Museum), Delhi
The Gandhi Memorial Museum, also known as the National Gandhi Museum, is situated in New Delhi, dedicated to showcasing the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. It was initially established in Mumbai shortly after Gandhi's assassination in 1948 but later underwent multiple relocations before finding its current home at Raj Ghat, New Delhi in 1961.
At first, the museum housed personal belongings, newspapers, and books associated with Gandhi in Mumbai. In 1951, these items were moved to buildings near Kota House in New Delhi. Subsequently, the museum shifted again in 1957 to a mansion and, finally, in 1959, it settled at its permanent location in Raj Ghat. The official inauguration took place in 1961, commemorating the 13th anniversary of Gandhi's assassination.
The museum's library fulfills a dual purpose by presenting Gandhi's work to the public and serving as a study space. The extensive book collection is categorized into two sections: works authored by or about Gandhi and books on various other subjects. Currently, the library houses over 35,000 books and documents, with an additional collection of 2,000 periodicals in both English and Hindi, chronicling Gandhi's life.
Within the National Gandhi Museum Gallery, visitors can view a remarkable array of paintings and personal items once belonging to Mahatma Gandhi. Of special significance are the Satyagraha woodcut by Willemia Muller Ogterop, one of Gandhi's walking sticks, the shawl and dhoti he wore at the time of his assassination, one of the bullets used in the tragic event, and his urn.
