Bibliotheque Nationale d'Algerie (National Library of Algeria), Algiers

The National Library of Algeria (Bibliothèque Nationale d'Algérie, BNA) is Algeria's largest public library and a cornerstone of cultural and academic life in the country. Located in the El Hamma district of Algiers, this institution boasts an extensive collection of manuscripts, books, newspapers, magazines, maps, and musical documents, including rare and historical manuscripts dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

Founded in 1835 by Adrien Berbrugger, the library's journey reflects Algeria's historical and cultural evolution. Initially housed in a state residence, it was moved in 1838 to the Janissaries Barracks near the Bab-Azoun gate due to the growing size of its collections. Subsequent relocations included a Moorish-style private house in 1848 and the former residence of Dey Mustapha Pasha in the Casbah in 1863. However, these facilities were deemed inadequate for a modern library.

In 1958, after decades of planning and delays, the library settled into a modern building on Tagarins Hill, Boulevard Frantz-Fanon, overlooking the Bay of Algiers. This new facility adhered to contemporary standards, combining functionality with architectural style. Following a devastating fire at the University Library in 1962, the National Library played a critical role in preserving Algeria’s bibliographic heritage.

In the 1980s, modern library practices prompted a new building project, leading to the opening of the current facility in central Algiers on November 1, 1994, with public access starting on April 16, 1998. Spanning 67,000 square meters over 13 levels, it offers storage for 10 million volumes on 170 kilometers of shelving and accommodates 2,500 readers.

A blend of historical richness and modern innovation, the National Library of Algeria stands as a testament to the country's commitment to preserving and sharing knowledge.
